Once, I dreamed of living in a Painted Lady in San Francisco. Then I imagined a Painted Lady holding that dream inside her rooms for me. This piece, "The Painted Lady Dreams" helped me make my dream come true. Art is magic that way.
I lived in Central Oregon for ten years. It was where my art was born. Creating art helped heal my past so I could step into my future with trust and confidence. The process wasn't easy. "Guided" was one of those artworks that reminded me I wasn't alone.
I volunteered at a safe house for abused women. We created art together. "Sacred Spaces" was inspired by the importance of a safe place within and without ourselves where we are free to create, to dream, to enjoy the support of community.
Have you been to San Miguel de Allende in Mexico? "Little House of Love" was inspired there. It's a World Heritage Site, a place of big sky, volcanic sierras, colonial architecture and soul inspiring art. I loved photographing doors and domed roofs there, watching families in the plazas on Sunday and watching the sun go down on the roof with a cold cerveza.
"What we Create." EVERYTHING!
In the Vedic text, the Upanishads, it says, “You are what your deepest desire is. As your desire is, so is your intention. As your intention is, so is your will. As your will is, so is your deed. As your deed is, so is your destiny.”
My intention is to use my hands to create good for me and for the good of all.
I photographed this beautiful woman as she gazed serenely at the Leaning Tower of Pisa on one of our trips to Italy. I have since used her image in several artworks and she was the inspiration for a novel I wrote.
I call her Maya.
You wield your magic wand like you have nothing better to do than create exuberant, multi-hued, jaw dropping beauty. Like it's nothing to turn leaves into masterpieces.
I want to be just like you when I grow up.
Staying home with my children was one of my greatest joys in life. "Mother and Child" celebrates this time.
Today, I love every moment I get to spend with my son and daughter.
"I want to be a jockey when I grow up," my daughter announced when she was eight years old.
I loved watching her play with this dream. She imagined every detail. It empowered her to dream big later in life and to make her dreams come true.
She's my inspiration for "Dandelion Dreams."
On a long swim off the coast of Oahu, I looked back and from the depths emerged a Hawaiian Honu. "Sea Turtle" was born. 150 million years seemed to greet me in one miraculous moment as the ancient navigator glided by.
The green guardian spoke to me the way inspiration always does.
"How did this happen?" asked my son. He stood in awe on the trail surrounded by the spectacular Painted Hills at the John Day Fossil Beds in Eastern Oregon.
There is an evolutionary explanation to the sublime, jewel tones in the gradations in the hills, but I didn't know it. "No idea, buddy, "I said.
I gathered from his long, silent state of wonder that no explanation was necessary.
"It's a mermaid," one woman said.
"No, it's a woman holding a butterfly," said another.
"I think it's a little girl dreaming, said the third woman in the trio. They were sipping wine during an art walk. I stood nearby.
"It's called, 'Follow Your Bliss,'" said the first woman.
I had a dream where a friend of mine insisted I go up a steep hill to see a tree.
"You're going to love it!" she said.
The tree was scrawny and leafless. "Don't you love it?" she asked enthusiastically. I awoke unsettled.
Days later I dreamed of the women of my past underground and bound by roots. Victims of emotional and physical abuse, they were unable to express how they felt. "Reclaiming Yin," is a gratitude piece for the lessons I learned from their difficult past and the opportunities I have to use my voice creatively.
The Blue Bird is a harbinger of happiness and a symbol of hope. When one alights in my yard, I'm immediately grateful for the good omen. When more than one visit, it's a party!
"Spring Fling" celebrates joyful possibilities.
I love visiting inspiring sites that tell me about the person behind the business. Here I share a bit of my soul ... so make yourself comfy, settle in with a good tea or join me with a glass of wine. Here's what inspired some of my favorite artworks over the years. You'll watch some videos I made for fun and you'll see photographs from my recent travels. I really love to travel.
